The covert Christian symbolism that can be found throughout the movie Frozen is evident. There are definitely some aspects of the movie that strongly suggest different Christian religious symbols and theology.

From her kind personality to her selfless self sacrifice to save her sisters life, it is clear to viewers that Anna’s character is comparable to Christ, believing in and demonstrating the strength of love. Elsa has guilt and broken relationships with those who used to be close to her. Because of this guilt she feels trapped and pushes people away. Even more convincing, Elsa’s similarities to Dante’s Satan further reinforce her selfish and sinning personality. Additionally, from the very Christian original tale The Snow Queen to the smaller symbols such as the cross at Elsa’s coronation and the Joan of Arc painting that hangs on the castle wall all connect the world of Frozen to Christian theology.

However, I do not believe that Disney set out to exemplify Christian symbolism in Frozen.  I personally believe that it is possible that Anna’s similarities to Christ are present simply because being honest, kind, loyal, loving and selfless are qualities that everyone everywhere should strive to have - Disney may have just been trying to send this message to its viewers. Similarly, although Anna’s self sacrifice to save Elsa is extremely similar to Christ’s sacrifice to save sinners, Disney could have just been representing the importance and strength of love and family. Furthermore, Elsa’s self isolation and indulgence in her gift are simply showing how desire and selfishness can destroy a person’s life and relationships.

The “Christian morals” that are represented throughout Frozen are simply good moral rules that everyone should strive to follow. Thus, the themes suggested throughout Frozen are not necessarily there to support Christian theology but simply show viewers the benefits of being a selfless, loving, kind hearted individual.
